France to begin intercepting small boats in Channel following UK pressure
France has agreed to begin intercepting small boats in the English Channel, following an extended period of pressure from the UK.
The change in policy comes after the British leader wrote to the President urging him to support the plan and stating there currently "lack any effective deterrent" in the maritime passage.
French maritime police have been authorized to intercept the small boats at sea, but exclusively prior to they've collected their migrants, according to authoritative statements.
French authorities have rarely acted to stop the overcrowded boats departing from the coastline because it is viewed as too great a risk to both officers and individuals.
"It is essential that we deploy these methods this month... We have zero effective prevention in the Channel."
Now, a French naval police spokesperson says officers will start intervening at sea, with the objective of safeguarding human life.
Significantly, the official excluded the use of entanglement devices to intercept boats, which had previously been reported as a potential technique to snarl the engines of the vessels.
The decision to intervene at all is a major step forward, coming after a brief shift towards a stricter approach this summer, which dropped off when the former government official left government.
That was highlighted in July, preceding a meeting between the Prime Minister and President, when French police were observed walking into the sea to slash the hulls of a boat.
Currently French officials will again be permitted to stop boats before they collect migrant passengers from the coastal areas of northern France, although it's uncertain how the small boats will be prevented.
Powerful gusts are currently delaying the start of interceptions and the people-smuggling gangs will be looking for ways to adapt to evade detection, as they have frequently done in the previous instances.
UK immigration authorities and Downing Street have been contacted for comment.
