Hurricane the storm is forecast to strengthen into a rare category five cyclone as it veers toward the Caribbean island, causing deadly flash flooding and landslides.

The hurricane, which had winds of up to 120 mph as of 6:00 AM GMT, is presently veering toward the northwest in the Caribbean Sea and is projected to reach land by early next week, as reported by meteorological authorities.

Advisories of blackouts and disruption to utilities have been announced as Melissa brings up to 30 inches of precipitation and coastal flooding as high as 4m above ground. "Seek shelter now," locals have been advised.

"But the best way to address anxiety and any unease and anxiety is to be prepared."

Inhabitants are being advised to protect their properties with sandbags and timber panels, and to gather basic necessities.
