Moments before his name was called, a nervous idea flashed through the golfer's mind. He revealed he was thinking, "Please don't let it be an F1 driver this time."
"It's been a tremendous night for golf," he stated. "The sport was recognized in such a significant way, with the team winning and then with my award. It's a special evening for golf, and with any luck we can capitalize on that."
On this occasion, however, there was no last-minute surprise. The result was decisive, allowing a delighted McIlroy to savor a standout evening for both himself and the European Ryder Cup winners, who were crowned the year's best team.
Non-Stop Adventures
Choosing not to celebrate at the post-ceremony celebrations, McIlroy was already focusing on his upcoming event. After played in the Golf Channel Games in Florida and jetted to the UK, he was returning immediately to Florida.
"It's been a hectic 24 hours," he said. "I am anticipating a little bit of rest over Christmas."
Unfinished Business
Nevertheless, McIlroy made clear he has no desire to slow down, even after completing the ultimate golfing achievement earlier in the year. "My belief is I've got a several strong seasons in me," he asserted.
"More majors, order of merit titles, Ryder Cups, that's the aim. But as long as you feel like you can keep getting better and have the drive, that's the essential part."
Team Triumph
Elsewhere, fellow European Tommy Fleetwood, who was on stage to accept the squad honor, also applauded golf's exceptional night and his pal's award.
"Those are the memories that will stay with us forever so to get the fan's acknowledgment for that is amazing," Fleetwood said. "Witnessing it Rory win, I think he deserves it so much."
After it was noted that McIlroy was only the third in his sport to win the award in its long history, Fleetwood grinned before joking, "Not a very popular bunch are we!"
Looking Ahead
Fleetwood hopes to at last capture his maiden major next year but he recognized McIlroy still craves more success. "Provided that you want to be the ultimate competitor, and you're still driven, you'll find things to improve," the 34-year-old said.
Club Support
As he was leaving, a last query came up. Being a massive Manchester United fan, he has been invited to show his trophies at Old Trafford before. Might he be persuaded to do it again after his new triumphs?
"As long as they halt the flow of multiple scores in Manchester," he answered with a laugh. "There is progress. There's a hint of positivity around."
After a truly spectacular season, it's little surprise that he is looking on the positive aspects.
