Balloons carrying thousands of packs of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was forced to close for several hours when multiple of them entered the national airspace.
Air Travel Interruptions
The operational halt led to the cancellation of 30 flights impacting 6,000 passengers, with authorities cautioning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Officials confirmed that 25 meteorological balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two balloons ending up precisely above the main terminal.
Up to 14 of the weather balloons launched over the weekend drifted across the Vilnius area, which is home to Lithuania's capital city and adjacent to the border with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
A minimum of 11 balloons transporting eighteen thousand packages of illegal tobacco products have since been recovered, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to border security officials.
International Illegal Trade
Despite the disruption, authorities noted that "Balloons with contraband - cigarettes from Belarus - are common occurrences in neighboring countries."
To date in the current year, 544 balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been documented the previous year.
Regional Consequences
At the same time, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which also borders Belarus, has documented over 100 cases in which contraband was flown from its neighbor using the balloons.
Smuggling Techniques
When questioned about why smugglers utilize a technique that proves especially affected by weather conditions rather than more controllable drones, officials clarified that "Weather devices are basic instruments used by contraband transporters - they are more economical than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Authorities continued that "The objective of our agencies is to capture the greatest possible quantities of contraband and to arrest masterminds and perpetrators so that this activity become unprofitable and present no risk to civil aviation."
European Tensions
These airspace violations occur during a period of heightened tension in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have caused air traffic disruption across European nations.
Recent incidents in neighboring countries have caused EU officials to fast-track conversations about enhancing aerial security throughout the region.
